Wednesday, May 14th. 7:30am
This morning greets us with a return to frosty morning temps after a sub-freezing evening that says "winter" all-the-way! It's almost as if May wanted to give us one more taste of March. There's a long succession of cloud cover hugging the Cascades, providing a protective layer to the trails that will encourage a long morning/early afternoon of supreme skiing. It's currently 30* at the Nordic lodge on its way to a high that should reach the mid/upper 30's by the end of today's operations. The cold temps are accompanied by a slight breeze that is predicted to remain steady throughout the day. The snow temp is a spot-on-return to yesterday's reading clocking in at -3*C / 28*F.
Last evening, while the trails were soft and malleable, the entire Nordic network (less Maiden's and Todd Creek) were groomed with smooth and wide skate corduroy. Immediately following that, classic tracks were set via snowmobile on Beginner's Luck, The Oval, Screamer, Easy Up, Emil's, Blue Jay's, Upper Devecka's, Woody's Way and Easy Back. Track setting in the freshly tilled cord produced nice, deep tracks for today's classic ski enjoyment. As night set in, the ski surface set up amid cooling temps and this morning it is fast, flowy, and fun. And with the recent and welcome snowfall, Yellow, Orange and Red snowshoe trails are open and beckoning for a sporting adventure!
Pole Pedal Paddle is coming up on Saturday, May 17th. This epic multi-sport race that sends individuals and relay teams on a 5-part course between Mt Bachelor and Bend is always a blast to spectate or volunteer or race in. To familiarize yourself with routes, start times, and impacts, visit the PPP website:
https://pppbend.com/. The Nordic Center offers skate and classic ski rentals as well as race waxing for this event. Give us a call today to secure your race day gear! 541-693-0999. The Nordic-leg of the course is signed and available for previewing. Please note that the section between the base of Red Chair and the top of Blue Jay's will not be cleaned and groomed until race day, but the rest of the course is in prime condition for previewing.
The Nordic Center is operating on Spring Hours (8am - 1:30pm daily) and grooming gets underway at 2pm sharp this time of year. It is essential that all skiers are off the trails at 1:30pm each day. Skiing in the later afternoon or evening on the fresh afternoon groom before it has had time to set can leave deep ruts that will freeze overnight and become treacherous for skiers the following day. We are happy to report full compliance so far and sincerely appreciate your cooperation.
